Why do People believe in the 2012 theory?

People will believe almost anything you tell them if you can find some kind of fact that could prove it to be reasonably true, however, those scriptures don't exactly prove it wrong either, 'A generation is going, and a generation is coming' I don't really believe in all the hype of 2012, but I have read the bible and something is going to happen, not necessarily in 2012. There is a description of the kind of things we'll experience before it happens however, and we seem to be dealing with a lot of them right now...
