Why were economic experts unable to predict the subprime mortgage crisis?

I too find it incredible that this housing crisis was unpredictable. You just have to walk around neighborhoods to see the surplus of homes on the market and the drop in value. That coupled with the fact that lenders were in trouble over a year ago and it was almost impossible to get a mortgage.
